Self Mutilation

Self-injury for example cutting has become increasingly popular among young people.self harm

“Contrary to popular myth, people who harm themselves are not trying to commit suicide. They use self-harm as a way of coping with difficult emotions. Instead of expressing their feelings openly, they take them out on their bodies by cutting or burning themselves, picking their skin, taking an overdose, bruising themselves or pulling their hair out.

Triggers for self-harm can include bullying, pressure at work, abuse, financial problems, pressure to fit in and relationship problems. When these pressures pile up, people can find it difficult to cope. Some say that they feel things are out of control.

One sufferer said: ‘I think control’s a big thing. You can’t control what’s happening around you, but you can control what you do to yourself.’

It’s often linked to feelings of self-hatred and depression. Some people find it difficult to give up the behavior despite realizing that it could be life-threatening and is not rational” (BBC News – medical report).

Are you harming yourself by cutting, burning or in some other way? This is an outward expression of all the pain you are carrying inside. God understands why you do this. He sees the turmoil and shame inside of you. He wants to help, if you will let Him. Some are harming themselves because they think that they’re hopelessly bad, and they are filled with guilt, or they feel they’re losing control.

Jes 50:10  Who among you fears Jehovah, who obeys the voice of His servant, who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of Jehovah and rest on his God.

The Bible also talk about this issue.  God gave His people specific laws about it:

Lev 21:5  …nor make any cutting in their flesh.

Lev 21:6  They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. For they offer the fire offerings of Jehovah, the bread of their God. Therefore they shall be holy.

Deu 14:1  You are the sons of Jehovah your God. You shall not cut yourselves

In the new testament we also see that cutting was a ritual performed by a man that was possessed by devils:

Mar 5:2  And when He had come out of the boat, immediately a man with unclean spirits met Him out of the tombs,

Mar 5:3  who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one could bind him, no, not with chains

Mar 5:4  because he had often been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nor could anyone subdue him.

Mar 5:5  And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones.

In pointing out the problem of cutting, the Bible also points out the solution to be delivered from cutting.  That solution is to call on the name of the Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be saved from Satan’s influence.  It’s only the anointing of the true and living God that can break this spiritual yoke over an individual’s life.

Rom 10:9  Because if you confess the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation.

Dear God, I acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe that He was born of the Virgin Mary. I believe that He died on the cross, that His blood was shed for my sins and that He arose from the dead. I confess that I have disobeyed your commandments. I ask you to forgive me for these sins. I now ask Jesus to come into my heart. Be my Savior. Be my Lord. Be my soon coming King. I will do my best to obey your teachings as recorded in the Bible. Thank you, in Jesus name. Amen.
